System Psychiatrist-in-Chief
Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) seeks a new Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and System Psychiatrist-in-Chief to lead one of the nation’s top psychiatry programs. The Chair will also serve as the Chair of the Department within Vanderbilt University School of Medicine (VUSM), overseeing the relevant faculty and education issues in VUSM and the medical staff in the Vanderbilt Psychiatric Hospital. Comprised of over 90 primary faculty members and 40 clinically credentialed professional staff, the Department has risen in ranking by the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research from #46 in 2006 to #24 in 2024 for NIH funding. The next Chair and System Psychiatrist-in-Chief will have programmatic oversight and responsibility for all behavioral health services and will shape the strategic priorities of this nationally recognized Department, related to advancing its clinical, research, and educational missions. This team-based leader will develop trusted relationships with key leaders at Vanderbilt Psychiatric Hospital, across the broader health system, and within the school of medicine.
Reporting to Dr. Jeffrey Balser, who serves as President and Chief Executive Officer of Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Dean of the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, the Chair of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and System Psychiatrist-in-Chief will provide strategic, clinical, and academic leadership for the academic Department and broadly across Vanderbilt Health, shaping its future direction across all missions. The Chair and System Psychiatrist-in-Chief will partner with institutional leaders to strengthen Behavioral Health services, advance research and discovery, support educational excellence, and ensure operational and financial sustainability. As a visible and engaged leader, this individual will recruit, develop, and retain outstanding faculty and foster a culture of collaboration, inclusion, and innovation.
VUMC seeks a distinguished psychiatric physician leader with a strong record of academic accomplishment, clinical excellence, and collaborative leadership. The successful candidate will be eligible for appointment as a tenured Full Professor at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and will bring the vision, credibility, and interpersonal skills needed to lead a complex and evolving Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences within a leading academic health system.
