Columbia and Bassett have maintained a formal affiliation since 1947, actively participating in joint teaching and research initiatives for more than six decades. Bassett joined the New York-Presbyterian Healthcare System in 2003.
Bassett Medical Center is where people in the region come for advanced care, such as: open-heart surgery, daVinci robot-assisted surgery, specialized cancer treatment, advanced vascular care, trauma care, neurosurgery, and advanced orthopedic and spine care. This nationally recognized tertiary care hospital houses the Bassett Heart Care Institute and the Bassett Cancer Institute. The Medical Center offers postgraduate residency training programs in Internal Medicine and General Surgery and is a medical school campus of Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons (http://www.columbia-bassett.org/).
The Bassett Physician Group is comprised of a full-time, salaried staff numbering over 400 physicians and advanced practice professionals in a multi-specialty group practice. The Bassett Physician Group provides primary and specialty care at the Bassett Clinic and staffs Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown.
Through the Bassett Regional Network, Bassett physicians and other health professionals provide primary, preventive, and outpatient care at 26 health centers, as well as care and treatment at 19 school-based health centers throughout the region to children who might otherwise never have the chance to receive this care. The network also connects people in the region to a multitude of specialists who provide technical expertise and skills in areas typically found only in big cities. Many of these specialists travel to see patients at Bassett affiliated community hospitals as well as at specialty campuses in Herkimer, Oneonta, and Hartwick Seminary. The specialty services offered range from cardiology, cancer and orthopedic care to ear, nose and throat, vascular care, dermatology and more. In addition, a variety of outpatient diagnostic and surgical procedures are available on these campuses as a convenience to patients. The specialty care in Cooperstown and in the region, in combination with the network’s community based health centers, results in more than 700,000 patient visits per year.
Bassett Healthcare Network has been named one of the most integrated health networks in the nation, ranking 48th out of 100 health systems around the country. Bassett is one of only five health systems in New York State that made it into the ranking of top-performing IHNs. Published January 23 in Modern Healthcare magazine, the SDI Top 100 IHNs for 2012 recognizes health systems that optimize health care delivery.
