Company History

Community Programs, Inc. has been in continuous operation providing substance abuse treatment services in Waterford Township since 1968. A number of community leaders, including the late Honorable Kenneth Hempstead of the 51st District Court, saw a growing need in the community for substance abuse treatment services. As at that time, there were none. CPI began as a “drop-in” facility located in a house lent to the program by a local business. In 1974, CPI expanded services to include residential substance abuse treatment services. In 1978, the program’s primary operations moved to 1435 North Oakland Boulevard and provided services to men, women, and outpatient. Since that time, the 1435 North Oakland Boulevard facility has expanded three times to meet the needs of an increasing demand for treatment services for women, for those requiring detoxification services and outpatient services.
In April 2005, Community Programs, Inc. opened a second facility at 1255 North Oakland Boulevard. The new facility allowed the organization to expand services to include:
1) A specialty residential treatment location for women, with a maximum capacity of 70 female clients and treatment services specific to the needs of women. These services include additional interventions for women who are dually-diagnosed with co-occurring disorders, having a substance abuse or dependence disorder and a mental health disorder.
2) A sub-acute detoxification unit, staffed 24 hours per day by qualified medical professionals. At maximum capacity, this co-ed unit houses up to 20 clients requiring short-term detoxification.
3) Outpatient treatment services for substance abusing adults.
4) The expansion of residential services for referred male clients for the care and housing of dually-diagnosed clients with co-occurring disorders, as well.
In 2009, CPI expanded residential treatment services at the 1435 building to include the treatment of adult males convicted of a sexual offense. A satellite office was opened at 53 W. Huron, Pontiac, Michigan 48342 in 2009 to provide outpatient services for substance abusing adults and also to provide outpatient sex offender treatment services for adults convicted of a sex-related offense. Over the course of the last forty four (44) years, CPI has provided both residential and outpatient treatment services to several thousand adult male and female consumers from various ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds.
Community Programs, Inc. has provided therapeutic rehabilitation services for low and no-income clients by way of staffing grants and service contracts since 1975. The organization maintains multiple service contracts and provides medically monitored sub-acute detoxification, treatment for dual-diagnosis/co-occurring disorders and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) substance abuse treatment to adults in residential and outpatient settings. CPI is a regional service provider for consumers throughout Michigan, including: Oakland, Genesee, Eaton, Livingston, Washtenaw, Ingham, Calhoun, Wayne, Kent, St. Clair, Lapeer, Osceola and Macomb counties.
