Company History
In 1963, Paul and Mildred Krentel’s sixth child, Melissa, was born with Down Syndrome. Unhappy with the care offered to individuals with developmental disabilities at that time, the Krentels purchased a 35-room mansion in Berwyn, PA. This home became “The House that Love Built”, where Melissa could grow up in a home-like setting with peers for playmates.
Founded in 1966, Melmark now serves 357 children and adults with a wide range of developmental and intellectual disabilities including autism spectrum disorders, acquired brain injuries and other neurological and genetic disorders.
With a combined staff of over 850 people at locations in Berwyn, PA and Andover, MA, Melmark is one of the country’s premier organizations providing residential, educational, vocational and therapeutic services in an environment of warmth, care and respect.
