Saint Peter's University Hospital (SPUH)

For more than a century, Saint Peter’s University Hospital has been serving the healthcare needs of central New Jersey. From its simple beginnings in 1907, Saint Peter’s has grown to become a technologically-advanced, 478-bed major teaching hospital, that provides a broad array of services to the community—from sophisticated care of premature babies to specialized geriatric medicine.

• It has been designated by the State of New Jersey as a Specialty Acute Care Children’s Hospital, Regional Perinatal Center, and Stroke Center and operates one of the largest maternity services in the state. The hospital employs a staff of 3,300 and has a medical staff of 900+ physicians. SPUH treats more than 25,000 inpatients and more than 200,000 outpatients annually. It is a regional specialist in diabetes, gastroenterology, head and neck surgery, oncology, orthopedics, and women’s services.

• Saint Peter’s University Hospital has adult and pediatric emergency departments and has the capacity to easily treat 70,000 to 75,000 patients a year and includes the following: Robert and Joan Campbell Adult Emergency Department; and the Dorothy B. Hersh Pediatric Emergency Department – one of the largest pediatric emergency departments in New Jersey.

• Saint Peter’s University Hospital provides comprehensive clinical genetic services and, as a state-designated regional center, the Department of Medical Genetics and Genomic Medicine provides inpatient and outpatient services to patients of all ages with a variety of genetically influenced conditions including for abnormal newborn screens, confirmed inborn errors of metabolism, birth defects, chromosome abnormalities, hearing impairment, craniofacial and genetic bone disorders, autism spectrum, cancer, and diseases of the heart, lungs, kidneys, brain, skin, muscles, eyes, gastrointestinal and genitourinary tracts. The Department houses one of the largest comprehensive Lysosomal Disease Therapy Centers in the United States; trials orphan drugs; and provides a broad range of pre-conceptional, prenatal, and postnatal genetic counseling as well as pregnancy-specific management and treatment of maternal metabolic, lysosomal, and genetic conditions.

• Saint Peter’s University Hospital has a comprehensive Simulation Center for Interprofessional Learning (SCIL) within the Hospital. Being able to learn and practice procedures on mannequins, including a SimMom®, allows trainees to obtain skills and confidence in a simulated environment without fear of actual harm. The SCIL promotes the development of a multidisciplinary approach to patient care. It is structured to meet the educational needs of all healthcare staff (medical students, residents, attending physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, pharmacists, social workers, and others) and to foster improved communication among all members of the healthcare team. Attending physicians can use the Center for hands-on training and practice, maintenance of certifications, and to hone their skills in dealing with complex and new procedures.

o The Simulation Center for Interprofessional Learning has three separate and distinct platforms: Institute for Bedside
Medicine (IBM); Institute for Technical Simulation (ITS); and Medical Library for Healthcare Providers and Patients

• SPUH is fully accredited by The Joint Commission and is certified as an advanced primary stroke center, certified in perinatal care, and verified as a Level IV Maternal Care Facility.

• SPUH has a strong tradition of excellence in nursing and in 2020 was designated for the sixth consecutive time by the American Nurses Credentialing Center as a Magnet® Designated facility, becoming only the fifth hospital in the world to do so at the time. Saint Peter's was the 10th hospital in the nation to originally achieve this coveted award in 1998.

• In 2014 and 2017, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) earned the Silver Beacon Award from the American Association of Critical Care Nurses and in 2020 became a Gold Beacon Award recipient. The award recognizes the nation's top critical (intensive) care units. Saint Peter’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) also earned a Beacon Award for Critical Care Excellence for a fifth consecutive time. The Cardiac Progressive Care Unit and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit have also earned the Beacon Award. Saint Peter’s has received numerous Women's Choice Awards over the years including the 2023 Best Hospitals Award for Breast Center, Mammogram Imaging, Minimally Invasive Surgery, Obstetrics, Patient Experience, Patient Safety, and Women's Services.

• Saint Peter's University Hospital was recognized among the nation's Best Maternity Hospitals in 2022 by Newsweek magazine.

• Saint Peter’s is the only New Jersey hospital that is a member of The Council of Women’s and Infants’ Specialty Hospitals. CWISH is a collaborative of 14 hospitals across the country that works together to establish best practices in support of programs, and national policy for women’s and infants’ healthcare services.
