The Kent Center
Company Overview
The Kent Center delivers mental health and addiction treatment services in an atmosphere of dignity, respect, and confidentiality. Our broad array of behavioral health care services yields efficient service coordination while enhancing TKC’s ability to provide treatment. By offering wraparound treatment programs through an integrated behavioral health philosophy, we can respond effectively to clients with multiple diagnoses or other unique situations. Services are tailored to strengthen familial units while cultivating individual growth.
The Kent Center is licensed by the Department of Behavioral Healthcare, Developmental Disabilities and Hospitals (BHDDH), and the RI Department of Health, and is a certified Rhode Island Medicaid provider. Our case management, outpatient counseling, crisis intervention, and community housing programs are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). TKC is under contract with numerous State agencies and managed care organizations to provide a broad range of behavioral health care, educational, and consultative services in Rhode Island.
The Kent Center serves as a first responder for community trauma issues and provides critical Incident Stress Management & Crisis Response Services. Our clinicians assist with behavioral health diversions at The Kent and Providence County Courthouses, collaborate with Newport Community Mental Health Center on The Kent County Reentry Council, and actively participate on all three levels of The RI Reentry Council.
TKC provides community support services including psychiatric care, counseling, case management, vocational support, and residential care for adults with severe and persistent mental illness. Included among these services is Hillsgrove House, Rhode Island’s first certified clubhouse model of service for adults with mental illness. Such community support programs enable clients to live independently and participate actively within their communities. TKC works within the community by providing trauma-focused training to criminal justice personnel including police, probation and parole officers, and the judiciary, and by collaborating with Kent Hospital. We also operate a housing office through which we manage federal housing vouchers for people with disabilities.
In 2010, TKC adapted the NCTIC-developed Trauma, Addictions, Mental Health and Recovery (TAMAR) curriculum for veterans. By collaborating with the Judicial System, it developed the State’s first Veterans Court Program. It now successfully leads TAMAR Groups as treatment alternatives to the criminal justice system. Due to the success of this program, The Kent Center has developed a similar curriculum for the Rhode Island Adult Women's Correctional Facility, which was implemented in May 2014.
The Kent Center’s Youth & Family Services division serves children who have experienced traumatic events and require specialized intensive clinical and case management services to become healthy members of society. We assist many of our community’s most challenged students through our The Eleanor Briggs School, a leader in the field of psychiatric care and special education for children whose behavioral and emotional difficulties significantly impede their progress in Rhode Island’s public school system.
