Since 1924, the Battle Creek, Michigan VA Medical Center (VAMC) has been improving the health of the men and women who have served our nation. We consider it our privilege to serve your health care needs. We serve over 42,000 Veterans in 22 counties of the southwestern lower peninsula of Michigan.
The Battle Creek VAMC consists of 276 total operating beds, including 55 inpatient mental health beds, 11 inpatient medical beds, 109 Community Living Center beds, and 101 Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program (RRTP) beds. The Battle Creek VAMC is classified as a neuropsychiatric facility and is the hub of mental health care for VA Medical Centers in the lower peninsula of Michigan. Battle Creek VAMC provides state-of-the-art, evidence-based, recovery-oriented mental health care. The Medical Center also offers a wide variety of health care services, which includes both inpatient and outpatient care. Once eligibility has been determined, each patient enrolling for care is assigned to a primary care provider and team, who provides continuous and coordinated care.

Company History
On May 10, 1923, an executive order transferred 675 acres of land to the Veterans Bureau, predecessor organization to the Veterans Administration, for the construction of Battle Creek Veterans Hospital. It was completed in 1924 and was called Veterans Hospital Number 100 because it was the 100th VA hospital built in the United States.
At one time, the staff and patients from the hospital farmed about 200 acres of the site. It was considered good therapy for patients and helped the hospital to be reasonably self-sufficient. During these early years, many pine trees were planted in the northeast corner of the cemetery, which today presents an attractive cathedral-like feature.
Today, Battle Creek VA Medical Center is located on 206 acres with approximately 30 buildings used for patient care and administrative offices. At one time the Medical Center had over 1,400 beds. Today, much more care is done on an outpatient basis.
Battle Creek VA Medical Center is adjacent to Fort Custer, now a National Guard Training Center, which trained and deployed thousands of troops during World War I and World War II. During World War II, more than 300,000 troops trained there, including the famed 5th Infantry Division (also know as the “Red Diamond Division”) which left for combat in Normandy, France, June 1944. Fort Custer also served as a prisoner of war camp for 5,000 German soldiers until 1945.
To the west is the post military cemetery where 26 German POWs are buried. Sixteen of the German POWs were killed in an accident when their truck collided with a train as they were returning to the fort from a work detail on a sugar beet farm near Blissfield, Mich. The other 10 died from natural causes. Germans sent to Fort Custer for detention were retrained for jobs and shipped to other U.S. installations as duty workers. The post cemetery and additional surrounding land, 769 acres total, became the Fort Custer National Cemetery in 1981.

• Full-Time – 26 days per leave year – cannot carry more than 86 days into next leave year
• Part-time – 1 hour for each 10 hours in pay status – cannot carry more than 240 hours into next leave year
Sick Leave Accrual rate
• Full-Time – 13 days per leave year
• Part-Time – 1 hour for each 20 hours in pay status
• There is no cap on the number of hours of sick leave that you can carry over into the next leave year

• 10 paid Federal holidays
• 5-10 paid CME leave days per year
